Não é trivial, o facto do jogo do pau ter sobrevivido em Portugal como arte de combate ainda no século XXI. Activo com vários grupos tradicionais, a “baterem a sério” ainda que já não para matar como antigamente, bem como outros grupos continuaram também nas cidades a sua prática, fora do seu meio natural. Distingue-se de outros, quando sabemos que até muito recentemente, se praticava alguma forma de combate com varapaus, por praticamente toda a Europa.
